Galentine's Day 2015

Event Planning + Design

During my junior year, friend and fellow graphic communication student

Alyssa Wigant

approached me with an idea for a Parks & Rec inspired event at Cal Poly to celebrate female friendships and empower women on campus. Over the course of five months, we recruited a team of 11 student designers to create 15 unique cards celebrating feminism and their girl friends. In addition, we planned, marketed, and executed a two part event that received over 65 women in attendance.

Our project gained local and national attention through KCPR student radio, the Mustang News, Cal Poly President Armstrong, The Cal Poly Learn by Doing Conference, CSU Chancellor Tim White, and Amy Poehler's Smart Girls Foundation.

Amy's Smart Girls

purchased our designs to be distributed internationally on their website + social media, which received thousands of likes, shares, and downloads. All the profit went back to the Cal Poly Gender Equity Center, which played a huge role in making our dream a reality.

The Cards

Knowing that we were surrounded by talented female designers within our major, we reached out to friends and fellow students to contribute work based on our theme of Parks and Recreation, feminism, and celebrating girl friends. Below is a sample of the cards we received and produced.

The Event

Our event was split into two parts over the course of one day. The first was setting up a table in the University Union where we distributed our cards and had a photobooth to help promote our discussion later that night. During the discussion portion, we prompted girls to discuss their experiences as college women and their relationships with one another. At the end of the event, attendees shared that they felt more "connected", "inspired", and "uplifted".
